NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts and the Massachusetts EC Network seek a graduate student for a semester-long or year-long internship.
The Massachusetts Emergency Contraception Network, which includes more than 500 medical providers, community organizations, and government agencies, provides a forum for those interested in improving access to and public knowledge of emergency contraception.
Emergency contraception (EC) is a contraceptive method for use after sexual intercourse, when contraception has failed or when no contraceptives were used. EC is most effective the sooner a woman takes it, but it can be used up to five days after unprotected sex. Massachusetts passed a law in 2005 that requires hospital emergency departments to offer EC to rape survivors and allows pharmacists to dispense EC directly to women without them needing to visit their doctor or clinic first. Additionally, the FDA decided in August 2006 to make EC available over-the-counter to anyone aged 18 and older.
Primary responsibilities may include:
• Research and write monthly e-newsletter
• Contact community organizations and help distribute public education materials
• Contact pharmacies and pharmacy organizations to provide resources and materials
• Survey hospitals on EC access for rape survivors
• Contact community health centers and health care providers to assess needs and schedule workshops
• Organize educational forums and outreach events at local colleges and community organizations and/or help coordinate semi-annual membership meeting
• Attend EC Network meetings as possible
• Other projects based on needs of the organization and skills of the intern
Qualifications:
• Commitment to the missions of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts and Massachusetts EC Network;
• An interest in the politics and delivery of health care;
• Good communication, writing and analytical skills;
• Experience with outreach and public speaking helpful;
• Experience conducting surveys helpful;
• Ability to work well both independently and in a cooperative environment;
• Willingness to learn, flexibility and reliability.
Time commitment/compensation: Approximately 8 to 25 hours per week (flexible). This is an unpaid internship. All travel expenses will be compensated (up to $100).
